Aguirre de Cubas

MENTOR: Dr. Thai Ho, MD, PhD

Dr. Aguirre A. de Cubas, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. de Cubas conducted his graduate studies at the Spanish National Cancer Centre in Madrid and obtained his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Afterwards, Dr. de Cubas conducted his post-doctoral fellowship in the lab of Dr. W. Kimryn Rathmell at Vanderbilt University Medical Center focusing on kidney cancer epigenetics. During this period, he worked closely with the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Rathmell to study how metabolic derangement of immune cells contributes to the development of cancer and inflammatory diseases. This hybrid experience in these two laboratories focused on cancer and immunology, ignited Dr. de Cubas’ interest to work at this intersection and apply his genomics background to investigate complex interactions between cancer and immune cells. At MUSC, Dr. de Cubas’ research program is focused on understanding molecular mechanisms governing immunogenicity and antigenicity in renal cell carcinoma with a particular focus on the contribution of commonly mutated chromatin modifiers, such as SETD2 and BAP1.
