REINIER HERNANDEZ

MENTOR: Joshua Lang, MD, UW-Madison

Dr. Hernandez is an Assistant Professor of Medical Physics and Radiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he leads the Advanced RadioTheranostics (ART) laboratory. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Florida International University in Miami and a Doctorate in Medical Physics from UW-Madison. He received several prestigious fellowships as a trainee, including the NSF Graduate Research Program Fellowship, the NIH Biotechnology Training Program, and an Early Investigator Award from the Department of Defense. As a principal investigator and Director of the Radioisotope Production and Radiopharmaceutical Core at UW, Dr. Hernandez's laboratory focuses on developing cutting-edge, targeted therapies to treat advanced metastatic cancers, with a keen interest in clinical translation. His group's central area of interest has been developing novel radiopharmaceutical therapy agents for various cancers. He currently leads the clinical translational effort of three RPT agents targeting PSMA, CAIX, and cancer lipid metabolism. Another area of interest is cancer radiobiology, specifically the role of epigenetic readers in the transcriptional regulation of effector proteins of the DNA damage response machinery and their pharmacological disruption as a strategy to sensitize cells to radionuclide radiation. Additionally, he explores the immunomodulatory properties of radiopharmaceuticals and their ability to modulate the tumor microenvironment of immunologically "cold" tumors to enhance their response to immunotherapies. Dr. Hernandez's scientific accomplishments include over 75 peer-reviewed publications, several international patents, and two book chapters. He has received numerous awards from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, and the Radiological Society of North America, including the Berson Yallow Award and two EANM Young Authors Awards. In recognition of his scholarly achievements, Dr. Hernandez was named one of the "Ones to Watch" by SNMMI in 2020, a campaign recognizing young leaders with the potential to shape the future of nuclear medicine.
